How to do Barbell Static Lunges/Split Squats

With your legs in a split stance (one forward, one back), lower down and back up under control. The further you lean forward the more glutes you are likely to target on the front leg. The more upright you keep the more you are likely to target the quads on the back leg (particularly if you keep the weight on the back leg)
